Straight Flush

We’ve all heard about poker is a game of luck. But did you know to win the gamble, what it comes down to is having the best possible poker hand ranking? It is through these poker combinations, such as the straight flush that you will walk home as the winner. Players place enough emphasis on strategies, mind games, and bluffs. However, the true skill of making and using the right poker hand at the right table for the right price is what will fetch you victory. You can bet and raise all you want and most of the time your calculations may be right too! But it will be of no use if you can’t outshine your rivals at the showdown.

Significance of the Straight Flush

There are 10 different poker hand rankings used in the game of cards. To name a few they are:

  • Royal Flush.
  • Four of a Kind.
  • Full House.
  • Flush.

So, on and so forth. To know more visit our poker hand rankings page.

In theory and practicality, it is a super-hand ranking, one most players will gladly accept anytime and anywhere. In Texas Hold’em poker, players are dealt with two-hole cards and have a set of five community cards available to them dealt face-up on the table. Using these possible seven-card choices, players must make the best poker hand for winning the prize pool.

A player is said to have straight flush cards when the player possesses five cards in a sequence from the same suit. Do note that there are two aspects to having this rank, five cards in a sequence as well as the same suit. These can be diamonds, hearts, spades, or clubs.

Let’s Understand this With the Help of an Example:

Your 5-card poker hand consists of 4,5,6,7 and 8 of hearts, then you are said to have a straight flush.

This is a supreme hand and ranks at number two in the list of poker hand rankings only one behind the Royal Flush. In fact, the royal flush is nothing but the best possible version of this card ranking. It is a nearly unbeatable hand as players very rarely make a royal flush which in turn makes this hand rank almost invincible. The probability of getting a Royal Flush is .000154% while the probability of getting a High Card, which is at the last rank is 50.1177%.

Illustration to Make and Use a Straight Flush in a Real Game

  • Holding these cards in a game is not very common. However, it does happen and if you are aware of poker hand rules and you know how to form hands, you will not be problems making one of your own.

Here is an example of how that would be:

  • You are playing the No-Limit Texas Hold'em cash game variant at Spartan Poker where you are dealt with a 2 and 3 of Spades as your first hole cards.

  • You are now on the button. A player from an early position raises, and the action folds around to you. You look down at 2s-3s and decide to call. The small blind and big blind call as well.

  • The flop comes as 4s-5s-Kd, and this gives you an open-ended straight flush draw. The Ace of Spades or the 6 of it would give it to you. The short blind checks, the big blind checks, the player in early position checks and you bet. Everybody calls.

  • The turn brings the 6s, and you have yourself this hand rank. Given the board scenario, you are the one with the unbeatable hand. And that is how you create and use this sort of poker hand towards dominating the game and winning the pot.

Basic Rules of Straight Flush in Poker

Suits are Irrelevant

When playing poker, one of the first things you will realize is that in most games the suits are irrelevant. Forming this poker sequence is about getting that sequence in place regardless of the suit. A tie occurs when two or more players have this same hand rank at the showdown (which is extremely unlikely), then the card with the highest straight card determines the outcome. For instance, a 9-high straight flush from any suit will always beat a 7-high one.

Ranking the Straight Flush

Most poker games use the 52-card French deck and so does Texas Hold’em. Technically, the straight flush ranks ahead of every other and can beat every hand ranking below it. However, keeping the royal flush as a separate hand ranking, it ranks at number two. Using the French deck of cards, there are 40 possible straight flush variations in poker with the four Royal Flushes obviously securing the best positions.

How Does a Straight Flush Hand Rank?

The straight flush is the second-highest-ranking poker hand.

There are 10 poker hand rankings. The royal flush is the highest-ranking poker hand, and the second-highest-ranking poker hand is the straight flush.

The rest of the poker hands are lower than the straight flush. As you see above, the royal flush is the poker hand and the high card is the lowest poker hand.

How Does a Straight Flush Hand Match Up?

Only the royal flush matches up with the straight flush.

♥A♥K♥Q♥J♥10 is a royal flush. A sequence of the five consecutive cards A, K, Q, J, and 10 in the same suit make up the royal flush.

The straight flush in cards is made up of five consecutive cards in the same suit with an exception of the cards used in the royal flush.

A few examples of the straight flush are:

  • ♥5♥6♥7♥8♥9
  • ♦8♦9♦10♦J♦Q

The suits in the straight flush poker are irrelevant.

There can be a case where two players have straight flushes. How do you compare the strength of the poker hand and declare the winner when there are two straight flushes?

In this case, the highest card is considered to compare the strength of the poker hands. In the above example of two straight flushes ♥5♥6♥7♥8♥9 and♦8♦9♦10♦J♦Q, the second straight flush is the winner because Q is bigger than 9.
